Sermon and Liturgy Resources

where to go for help...my favorites

Commentary on the Revised Common Lectionary - for the previous, current, and upcoming Sunday in the lectionary cycle. Include general introductions to books, verse by verse comments, and my favorite - 'clippings' of research on each passage. always updated promptly. The best place to start for exegesis.

General Board of Discipleship - This agency of the United Methodist Church has worship resources, including prayer ideas and hymn suggestions, and also has preaching helps based on the lectionary each week. They also give service ideas for the special Sundays celebrated by the UMC.

Kairos CoMotion Lectionary Dialogue - This is a blog on the lectionary by Wesley White, a progressive United Methodist pastor. I like Wesley's approach to the texts. He always sees something I haven't seen and starts my mind in a new direction.

Liturgies Online - These complete liturgies by Rev. Moira Laidlaw are fantastic. She writes contemporary liturgies that are meaningful and hit to the heart of the lectionary texts - always progressive, open, inclusive, and inviting.

New Revised Standard Version Bible - read or search the NRSV bible online. quick way when you don't have a bible handy to find what you need.

Offertory Prayers - from the General Board of Discipleship. I always have a terrible time writing prayers of dedication. These lectionary-based prayers are great! Click on the month-appropriate link from this parent page.

Preaching Peace - This site offers deep, thoughtful reflection on the lectionary texts. The perspective: peace, obviously, but more than that, a real, thorough examination of American imperialism, mimesis, and how the words of Jesus can speak through all of these things to reach us today. Highly recommended.

Process and Faith - This great site offers process-theology oriented lectionary reflections from various theologians, including my favorite, John Cobb. Process Theology isn't just for classrooms and books, but for real life, as they adeptly show by applying process thought to the lectionary readings.

The Revised Common Lectionary - gives the readings for all three years in the lectionary cycle, plus dates. clearly outlined. in the New Revised Standard Version.

Sermons and Lectionary Sermon Resources - from Rev. Richard Fairchild. Includes sermons upcoming and past for all three lectionary years, links to special occasion planners, children's sermons, etc. A resource center for several other sites. A great starting point to get a variety of perspectives.

Sermons from Seattle - This site is a huge collections of sermons preached by Rev. Edward Markquart, a Lutheran pastor. He has a very didactic preaching style, and I mean that in a good way - he teaches the passages in his sermons, and (from reading) seems to make them very interactive. A great resource when your mind is stuck!

The Text This Week - this site has extensive work done for you on each lectionary Sunday, posted several Sundays in advance. There are links to movies and images related to themes of the week, sites that deal specifically with exegesis of texts, scholarly essays, sections that have sample sermon, links to children's sermons for the week, and links to worship and liturgical resources, prayers/hymn suggestions, etc., for each week.
